Eric Cros is a cabinetmaker whose passion for music drove him to start making folded rear horn hi-fi speakers.
With his skilled woodworking ability, he builds seamless cabinets needed for horn loading, also with an incomparable finish.
The speakers used are Electro-Magnet Speakers (EMS). Created originally by Michel Fertin, well-known for his wide band high-efficiency speakers driven by a moving coil and by 46 cm boomers used in the professional world. EMS has been taken over by his daughter Catherine Fertin, still offering the choice between a magnet and a shunt motor, which can be driven simply by a very small external power supply. This offers the advantage of much less inertia, and adjustable voltage for the speaker’s parameters in the enclosure, thereby fine-tuning the resonance frequency once mounted in the cabinet.
The wide band speaker has been selected for its accurate, vivid sound reproduction full of emotion. Its resonance frequency is under 40 Hz with a response of at least 18 kHz in the treble for 94 dB/w/m efficiency that can function with several types of speakers, subwoofers and tweeters. One advantage is that this wide band does not need filter control, avoiding phase rotation problems and offering an identical sound environment to that of natural listening, whatever the desired venue: a church, an amphitheatre or a concert hall.
Eric Cros uses several species of wood to build his speaker cabinets: birch plywood from Finland, solid birch and other species that thanks to their distinctive features ensure rapid frequency diffusion. Frequencies must travel quickly for horns measuring between 3.30 and 4 metres from the speaker to the enclosure’s air outlet, to avoid an acoustic phase difference.
Three rear horn enclosures are available with EMS speakers: the 21cm LB8, the 17cm LB7 and the 31cm LB12, each available with a moving coil, the last word in motorization at EMS, or with ferrite, still excellent while being more affordable. The very compact LINEA model offers the advantages of EMS in a small volume. The Jensen ONKEN enclosure’s reputation is firmly established, with its matchless bass advantages.
